Visiting Scholar – Yuzhen Zhao

Visiting scholar Yuzhen Zhao, from Wuhan, China, joined the Civil, Environmental & Architectural Engineering Department for the fall 2024 semester and part of the spring 2025 semester. He returned to China in early March.

Zhao joined the CEAE Department from the Hubei University of Technology where he is a member of the School of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environment. His research focuses on the influence of density, confining pressure and material permeability of lightweight cellular concrete (LCC). During his time at the University of Kansas, Zhao aimed to address gaps in the literature of the rational applications of LCC in geotechnical engineering.

What made you decide to be a visiting scholar? Have you had any interesting collaborations with faculty, students or staff here?

I decided to become a visiting scholar because of Dr. Jie Han’s outstanding research achievements. He has made significant contributions to the design of pile-supported embankments, slope and brick walls, supported by specialized model testing laboratories. I hope to continue collaborating with Dr. Han on research projects after I return to China.

How does your work impact the academic community or society at large? What takeaways do you hope to bring back to your institution?

This research provides valuable insights for optimizing LCC properties in engineering practices, contributing to better material performance in real-world applications. I hope to bring back new research topics and directions to my home institution, which I plan to explore further upon my return.

What are some key differences between your home institution and KU CEAE?

At my home institution, research direction guidance is less specific, compared to Dr. Han’s approach here. The research output at KU CEAE is also significantly faster.

What are some of your favorite spots in Lawrence? What do you like most about our community?

I enjoy spending time at the Rec Center, where I exercise regularly to stay healthy. The environment is excellent, and it has become one of my favorite spots.

What advice would you give to students or early-career researchers?

I would advise students and early-career researchers to attend conferences, exchange ideas with renowned professors and seek opportunities to broaden their perspectives.
