Global Roster - Alexandra Kondyli
Professor Alexandra Kondyli is from Athens, Greece. She got her degree in rural and surveying engineering (a 5-year degree) from the National Technical University of Athens in 2003. After graduation, Kondyli made her way to the States, earning both her MS and PhD in civil engineering from the University of Florida in 2005 and 2009, respectively.
Kondyli’s research is primarily on traffic operations and management as well as driver behavior. She focuses on understanding how our driving affects traffic flow and safety and developing ways to better manage traffic while improving safe mobility for all users.
As a teacher, Kondyli teaches Intro to Transportation Engineering at the undergrad level, and this fall, she will teach the Geomatics course. At the grad level, she teaches courses related to traffic operations, traffic flow and simulation.
Why does your research matter outside of the lab and/or classroom?
All communities need safe and accessible mobility for all users. My research has the potential to inform transportation policies and infrastructure improvements that reduce crashes, increase accessibility and efficiency and create safer communities for all users alike.
What is your favorite thing about Lawrence and the University of Kansas? What about your home country do you miss the most?
I love the college town vibe. Lawrence is a fun town to live in. KU has been great to me and provides me with lots of support to grow as a researcher and teacher.
I miss spending time with family. I also miss the sea!!!
What drew you to KU to teach?
I saw a great opportunity to join a research-intensive university. KU, and particularly CEAE, is a highly collegial environment that made me feel welcome from the beginning.
Are you rooting for anyone in the World Cup? Has it brought up any memories or traditions from home for you?
I wanted Algeria to progress since they chose Lawrence as their host town. They did very well, and I was very happy for them.
At the semi-finals, I was rooting for France, but after they lost to Spain, I was rooting for Spain, and I’m excited they won. They played really well, and they deserved it.
