KU teams with UMKC to perform damage assessment of May 2019 Linwood, KS Tornado.
A team led by Professor Elaina Sutley in CEAE performs a damage assessment of the EF4 tornado that ravaged parts of Douglas, Leavenworth, and Wyandotte Counties on Tuesday May 28, 2019. The team consisted of Professors Remy Lequesne, Jian Li, and William Kirkham in CEAE, Prof. Haiyang Chao in Aerospace Engineering, and Prof. ZhiQiang Chen at UMKC, along with several KU students. The quick response study was supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Structural Extreme Events Reconnaissance (StEER) Network. Door-to-door damage surveys were performed alongside unmanned aerial surveys of the impacted area. The team hopes to use this data to help codify tornado hazards and advance tornado-resistant design.
