Student Teams Take Two Places in Big Beam Contest

Professor Bob Lyon with student team members Allie Wagner, Cheng Chen,  Jie Wu, Andrew Hasse,  Ali Abdul Baki, and Madan Neupane (the Orange Team) took third place out of twenty in the Engineering Student Design Competition also known as the Big Beam Contest. The objective is for teams of students to fabricate and test a precast/prestressed concrete beam with the help of local precast concrete PCI Producer Members (PCI producer was  Coreslab Structures, Inc., Kansas City, KS; Representative: Terry Fleck). Prizes were awarded to the top twenty performers in consideration of efficient design, highest load capacity, and other categories. The KU team received 53.75 points with an award of $1500. The Red Team consisting of Abdulaziz Almarshad, Yaseen Ameen, Jessica Galvis, Xiangxiong Kong, Donald Spradling, and Madison Strutman received 45.0 points with a $500 award in twelfth place.
