Professor Mario Medina awarded “Changsha Friendship Award”

Thursday, October 8, 2015

On September 22nd, the Third Changsha Friendship Award awarding ceremony and mid-autumn reception for foreign experts was held in Changsha.  These experts were selected based on the significance of their contributions to the development of Changsha’s economy.  Changsha, with a population of over 7 million people, is the capital of Hunan Province.

Over the past three years Professor Mario Medina has collaborated in research with Changsha Maxxom High-Tech Co., Ltd. Changsha Maxxom is a company that focuses on the research, development and sales of environmental control technology for data centers and telecommunication stations. The company has developed more than 30 types of products, some of which use phase change energy storage technologies, which has been Prof. Medina’s research for the past 10 years.

Professor Medina (Civil, Environmental & Architectural Engineering), was one of the technical experts honored by Changsha’s central government on September 22.  During his work in Changsha Maxxom High-tech Co., Ltd., he contributed to the following research:

1)      He helped improve the design of a phase change energy storage air conditioner, which combines the energy storage and air conditioning techniques.

2)      He was instrumental in solving the problem of the combination between energy storage and air conditioning techniques.

3)      The energy supply and demand mismatch because of the intermittency of natural cold energy was solved by using phase change material within an energy storage heat exchanger. The natural cold energy was utilized efficiently and the energy consumption of air conditioners was reduced significantly.
