Record number of firms to participate in engineering career fair

Thursday, September 11, 2014

LAWRENCE — It’s a chance to make connections for that dream job, find the perfect internship or just learn more about the career opportunities that engineering and computer science have to offer. The University of Kansas Engineering and Computing Career Fair is set for noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, on the fourth, fifth and sixth floors of the Kansas Union.

The Engineering Career Center reports there are a record number of companies, more than 160 in all engineering disciplines, registered for the event. Students should review the complete list of employers and study those of interest prior to arriving. The career fair is open to all KU students, but employers will primarily focus on making connections with students in engineering, computing and the hard sciences. Students should dress professionally and bring multiple copies of their resume to share with prospective employers.

For more on what to expect and what employers are looking for, check out this video from an earlier Engineering and Computing Career Fair.

The Engineering Career Center has several workshops to help students prepare for the career fair. A session designed to help improve students’ interview skills is planned for 3 to 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, in 1 Eaton Hall. 20 Tips in 20 Minutes for Career Fair Success – a workshop that covers the basics of how to approach the career fair and connect with employers, will follow the session.

To help students prepare for the career fair, the KU Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers is hosting Evening with Industry, set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, in the Kansas Union Ballroom. Engineering and computing students can talk with employers, find out about job and internship opportunities, and make corporate connections. The cost is $5 for SWE members and $15 for nonmembers. Business attire and advance registration are required. Sign up here.

For additional information and tips on how to prepare for a career fair, students can go to www.ecc.ku.edu, or visit the Engineering Career Center, 1001 Eaton Hall, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
